"To ensure the American public access to fishing, to engage and represent the Federal For-hire fishing industry, and to ensure long-term sustainability of our nation's fisheries."
The roots of the Charter Fishermans Association were established in 2008, when a group of like-minded fishermen, business owners, and associates over time developed proactive and cutting-edge ideas to address the dire need for a more effective fishery management system for our nations fisheries. Several of these same charter for-hire fishermen decided it was time to establish a formal and unique non-profit entity to advocate these new ideas and in 2011 CFA was born.
This industry needs a focused direction so it can continue to provide long term access for recreational anglers to our nation's resources. For the most part, the for-hire industry has been made up of individual men and women who have the love and desire to work on the water. People who embrace the independence to do things their own way. It is the freedom to be your own boss and set out in the world on your own terms. This existence and attitude has served us all well in the past but now times have changed.
A few decades back, we found ourselves in a cycle of management that was not serving our industry as well as it could. It was clear we had to make changes that would put our anglers in a better position to access the resource. The strong independent spirit that is deep inside of for-hire fishermen and women has interfered with our ability to be organized in the past. Now we have a common place to come together share our experience and needs to better understand one another.
Below are our main goals... It will take a dedicated hardworking organization to bring these to success, and that is what CFA is about.
Our Board of Directors are actively involved in the development of new management ideas and strategies that will provide as much access as possible for our anglers. All the while promoting sustainable and accountable management so future generations are provided the same opportunity.
Regardless of your opinion or understanding, we want to hear your stories and ideas. Although we might not always agree, our organization strives to find common ground and work together whenever possible. Understanding the For-hire fleet and the challenges we face is what brings people together for a solution.
This is a never-ending mission, but certainly a worthwhile one. We work diligently with regulators, legislators, and stakeholders to promote sound science based management that protects the resource. By doing so we hope to produce enjoyable fishing experiences for future generations. Leaving it better than how we found it.
Working in the fishery management process is time and resource intensive, and the Board of Directors have agreed to share the burden and work load. The Charter Fishermans Association will give federal for-hire fishermen, business owners, and fishery-related associates a unified voice focused on the health and well being of the federal for-hire industry and the communities, crews, and families that rely on it. Now is the time for proactive management based solutions that work within the framework of the Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation Act.
